The Senior Assistance Center (SAC) provides valuable services to vulnerable senior citizens in Northwest Denver and beyond. Since 1981, SAC has devoted itself to the mission of promoting the self-sufficiency of all seniors in Colorado and to ensure that no senior goes without the necessities of life, including food, shelter, and public services.
In 1995, the organization purchased its building in Northwest Denver where it serves clients, stores food for its pantry, offer three food banks per week and serve five communities including the onsite food bank at 2839 W. 44th Avenue. Through our partnership with ArtReach, Inc., SAC has provided 1,645 tickets to clients for sporting events, museums and the arts at no charge. SAC has a small thrift store available for clients to do some shopping when they visit the food bank.
This year, SAC provided financial assistance to seniors to prevent eviction, utility shutoff and for medical equipment, in addition to food, clothing, blankets and other services. By the numbers, SAC kept 22 families from becoming homeless; kept utilities connected for 324 families and provided emergency food assistance to 355 families. It further distributed 8,561 bags of food; 2,596 bus tokens, delivered 2,193 Meals on Wheels, and provided wheelchairs and other medical equipment.
In addition to its other services, SAC’s on-the-job training programs and job assistance programs allow its over 365 volunteers and 19 staff members to provide the senior community with the resources they need to make their years all the more golden.
The Sunnyside neighborhood in Northwest Denver is between 38th Ave and I-70, Inca to Federal. The RNO, Sunnyside United Neighbors, Inc. (SUNI), has four goals:
Sunnyside is experiencing rapid redevelopment and growth. The RNO hosts open meetings the 2nd Thursday of every month learn from and inform developers about community needs, early in the process when our voices can best be heard and incorporated. This is especially critical as major reinvestment is occurring in East Sunnyside between Pecos and the new 41st and Fox Station. With community input, the RNO’s Planning & Community Development (PCD) committee has created a vision document, but needs your voice to get positive change.
